Georgetown & Cardigan Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels PEI is pleased to announce the development of Prince Edward Island’s newest Meals on Wheels Chapter in the communities of Georgetown and Cardigan.
In the spring of 2023, Meals on Wheels PEI partnered with the Department of Social Development & Seniors to support the Seniors Food Program Pilot, providing volunteer drivers to connect clients with meals in the communities of Georgetown and Cardigan.
After the pilot was completed, Meals on Wheels PEI led a new community garden project called ‘Food for All’ in partnership with Kings Playhouse in Georgetown. This project tested a sustainable food model, where a small team cultivated a community garden, hosted food-based workshops and prepared community meals that were delivered to Meals on Wheels clients and other members of the community.
As a result of these engaging community food projects, a small group of volunteers came together to develop a new Meals on Wheels PEI Chapter that will address ongoing community needs for food security and community connection.
‘We hope that this will be the beginning of a sustainable, community based approach to ensuring access to meals and meaningful connections with our neighbours,’ says Haley Zavo, Meals on Wheels PEI Provincial Coordinator and resident of Georgetown. ‘Fundraising is ongoing and the Meals on Wheels Georgetown/Cardigan Chapter is actively seeking volunteers to assist with weekly deliveries.’
In partnership with The Wheelhouse in Georgetown and the Province of PEI through the Community Food Security Program, hot and frozen meals will be delivered weekly to clients in the Georgetown and Cardigan area starting Thursday, January 11th.
